Last week, I read an online newspaper article in regards of Dolce and Gabbana advertisement. Dolce and Gabbana is a well known Italian designer label. The advertisement published by the company has created an outrage among human and women rights groups. As we can see, the advertisement depicts a man pinning a women by her wrists and the other four men look on.

According to the human and women rights groups, the scene can be related to a stylised gang rape. These accusations are made stronger by the blank and puzzled face of the women, and slight sneers on some of the men face. The groups said the advertisement is promoting violence against women.

These accusations were refuted by Dolce and Gabbana for promoting violence. In a statement, the designers said the advertisement was intended to recreate a game of seduction and highlight the beauty of our collection.

Fashion designers tend to advertise their product in a unique and artistic way. This is particularly important for them in order to assert the prestige and exclusivity image to their target audiences. However, Dolce and Gabbana advertisement has stretched the artistic definition too far, and the advertisement can be classified as controversial rather than artistic. The scene clearly pictured a woman in a disadvantageous way as she was being watched on by a group of man. The advertisement obviously does not seem to portray the beauty of Dolce and Gabbana collection as the advertisement seems to focus on the acts. Furthermore, it does not show a game of seduction. Instead, it shows a game of helplessness.
